Solomonia Saburova, the daughter of a Muscovite nobleman, was the first wife of Vasili III of Moscow, who she married in 1505. They were married for twenty years but had no children which led to Vasili’s decision to divorce her in 1525. The divorce was condomned by some in the Russian Orthodox Church including the Metropolitan but Vasili was not dissuaded. After the divorce Solomonia became a nun under the name ‘Sophia’ at a convent in Moscow, where she remained until her death in December 1542. She was later canonized as Saint Sophia of Suzdal.
